Fast computation of the geoelectric field using the method of elementary current systems and planar Earth models

چکیده
The method of spherical elementary current systems provides an accurate modelling of the horizontal component of the geomagnetic variation field. The interpolated magnetic field is used as input to calculate the horizontal geoelectric field. We use planar layered (1-D) models of the Earth’s conductivity, and assume that the electric field is related to the local magnetic field by the plane wave surface impedance. There are locations in which the conductivity structure can be approximated by a 1-D model, as demonstrated with the measurements of the Baltic Electromagnetic Array Research project. To calculate geomagnetically induced currents (GIC), we need the spatially integrated electric field typically in a length scale of 100 km. We show that then the spatial variation of the electric field can be neglected if we use the measured or interpolated magnetic field at the site of interest. In other words, even the simple plane wave model is fairly accurate for GIC purposes. Investigating GIC in the Finnish high-voltage power system and in the natural gas pipeline, we find a good agreement between modelled and measured values, with relative errors less than 30% for large GIC values.

Fast Finite Element Method Using Multi-Step Mesh Process
This paper introduces a new method for accelerating current sluggish FEM and improving memory demand in FEM problems with high node resolution or bulky structures. Like most of the numerical methods, FEM results to a matrix equation which normally has huge dimension. Breaking the main matrix equation into several smaller size matrices, the solving procedure can be accelerated. For implementing ...
متن کاملThe effect of earth magnetic field on the function of nuclear medicine imaging systems (SPECT)
Background: The nuclear medicine systems are very sensitive to the variation of the magnetic field. Photomultiplier tubes amplify low energy light signal and change it into electrical current. Low magnetic field can produce some variations in uniformity and special resolution of SPECT systems. In this study, we tried to evaluate the effects of magnetic field on the function of nuclear medic...
متن کاملA Study of Electromagnetic Radiation from Monopole Antennas on Spherical-Lossy Earth Using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method
Radiation from monopole antennas on spherical-lossy earth is analyzed by the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) method in spherical coordinates. A novel generalized perfectly matched layer (PML) has been developed for the truncation of the lossy soil. For having an accurate modeling with less memory requirements, an efficient "non-uniform" mesh generation scheme is used. Also in each time step...

Dc excitation of the field winding in a synchronous machine can be provided by permanent magnets. Permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) can offer simpler construction, lower weight and size for the same performance, with reduced losses and higher efficiency. Thanks to the mentioned advantages these motors are widely used in different application, therefore analysis and modeling of the...
متن کاملAnalysis of Planar Microstrip Circuits Using Three-Dimensional Transmission Line Matrix Method
The frequency-dependent characteristics of microstrip planar circuits have been previously analyzed using several full-wave approaches. All those methods directly give characteristic of the circuits frequency by frequency. Computation time becomes important if these planar circuits have to be studied over a very large bandwidth. The transmission line matrix (TLM) method presented in this paper ...
